CPA certification program modernization update

We are providing an update on the future CPA certification program because you are currently on the education pathway to the designation, and we understand this information is important to you.

Evolving Canada’s CPA Certification Program is essential as CPAs navigate a fast-changing economic, technological and social environment.

Insights we gained from environmental scanning, research, and a consultation process with over 4,000 stakeholders including academics, learners and CPAS across the country, has helped us to develop a new CPA education model that builds on the critical thinking, analytical, accounting competency and ethical mindset that CPAs have always been known for, and adds new skills relevant to the world today, such as AI, data and sustainability.

Through this new CPA education model, learners will continue to have to meet the profession’s high standards through education, experience and comprehensive, competency-based assessments.

We’ll continue to have common standards of entry to the profession. This will be achieved through the combination of meeting practical experience requirements and successful completion of all three-parts of the comprehensive, summative examinations.

The profession set an ambitious timeline to have the new CPA Certification Program in market in 2025 but finalizing a new model for this program has taken more time than expected. We now anticipate the earliest the new program will be available is early 2027.

What does this mean for you? Currently, nothing. We recommend all learners stay on their current education pathway.

If this pathway takes you beyond the new program start date, you will be supported through a period of transition from the current to the new program. This includes the offering of the CFE during a transition period.

And if you are transitioning from the current PEP program to the new certification program you will be able to receive exemptions based on modules and exams successfully completed.
